An n-alkane proxy for the sedimentary input of submerged/ ̄oating freshwater aquatic macrophytes
نویسندگان
چکیده
Lipid analysis of aquatic plants from lakes on Mt. Kenya, E. Africa, revealed that non-emergent (submerged and ̄oating-leaved) species displayed enhanced abundances of mid-chain length, C23 and C25 n-alkanes. In contrast, the emergent aquatic plants had n-alkane distributions similar to those of the terrestrial vegetation, typically dominated by the long-chain length homologues (>C29). A proxy ratio, Paq, has been formulated to re ̄ect the non-emergent aquatic macrophyte input to lake sediments relative to that from the emergent aquatic and terrestrial plants. # 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. Culture solutions of the submerged freshwater macrophytes Hydrilla verticillata and Vallisneria spiralis, separately incubated at 10 g of fresh weight (FW) per liter for three days, were extracted by solid phase extraction (SPE) followed by liquid liquid extraction (LLE), and the acquired ethyl acetate fractions were analyzed by gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to identify potential ...
متن کاملSubmerged Macrophytes Mitigate Direct and Indirect Insecticide Effects in Freshwater Communities
Understanding how ecological interactions mitigate the impacts of perturbations such as pesticides in biological communities is an important basic and applied question for ecologists. In aquatic ecosystems, new evidence from microcosm experiments suggests that submerged macrophytes can buffer cladocerans from pulse exposures to the widely used insecticide malathion, and that mitigation increase...

Satellite remote sensing can be an effective alternative for mapping cyanobacterial scums and aquatic macrophyte distribution over large areas compared with traditional ship’s site-specific samplings. However, similar optical spectra characteristics between aquatic macrophytes and cyanobacterial scums in red and near infrared (NIR) wavebands create a barrier to their discrimination when they co...

In closed aquatic environments like ponds or lakes, water bloom caused by eutrophication has severely damaged aquatic ecosystems. Some previous studies suggested that submerged macrophytes contribute to the development of aquatic ecosystems and water purification. Although water purification and lake ecosystem restoration using submerged macrophytes have been greatly studied, their specific mec...
متن کاملRole of Macrophytes in improving water quality of an aquatic eco-system
Macrophytes plays important role in balancing Lake Ecosystem. They have capacity to improve the water quality by absorbing nutrients, with their effective root system. At the same time death & decay of the macrophytes increases nutrient concentration, this leads to eutrophication. A rational setup between these two simultaneous activities is required to maintain the water quality of an aquatic ...
